My name is Shaghayegh Shoghi, a Ph.D. Chemistry student from Iran. I received my BSc in Applied Chemistry in 2020, and continuing my research interests, I found Western University’s Electrochemistry and Corrosion Science Group (ECS), led by Professor James J. Noël, a desirable destination. Therefore, I applied for the direct Ph.D. position and, fortunately, was accepted.
My research project is focused on studying the corrosion of copper in oxygenated and Sulfide-contained solutions. I am exploring what happens between Oxygen based corrosion and Sulphur based corrosion as there are some partially oxidized forms of Sulphur, such as Thiosulfate, in different regions of the nuclear waste repository, which tend to aggravate the intergranular attack. As a result, it is of high importance to investigate how these Sulphur compounds affect the corrosion of copper metal and copper oxide.
