This Special Issue honours Professor David Shoesmith’s contributions to the Canadian and international electrochemistry community. With expertise in corrosion electrochemistry and surface characterization, Prof. Shoesmith has dedicated his career to understanding and mitigating metal degradation, particularly under hostile conditions, and to revealing the intricacies of nuclear fuel degradation relevant to safe permanent disposal. Dave spent the first 25 years of his impressive career at Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. where he drove many projects of strategic importance to the Canadian nuclear industry, becoming Senior Scientist and Section Leader before joining academia. In his 20 years of professorship at Western University, he secured $65 million in research grants, helping to build a thriving electrochemical community at Western, in Canada, and beyond. David remains passionate about training and supporting the next generation of researchers and has a wide network of former trainees now working in industry, government, and academia.

This Special Issue aims to publish high-quality original research articles inspired by the work and influence of Prof. David Shoesmith, including the degradation chemistry of metals and oxides, corrosion mechanisms, near-surface analysis, oxide films and (re)passivation, and chemical strategies for nuclear waste containment and disposal.
